Try a good squirt with some electrical cleaner first covering the area around with a cloth.
To get the roof working first get the motor running you can do this with the engine off and boot lid open so that you can hear it.
If you are lucky you may be able to open convertible top by pressing the switch several times.
The most likely cause is the small micro switch located near the top fold on the left side.
Once you push the roof up slightly it should trigger a microswitch that allows the motor to turn on.

If it is too long it may just snap off the lever of the new microswitch again making the circuit all the time meaning the roof will work in all positions if the button and pedal are pressed.
The usual failures are a broken wire in the microswitch loom which bends with the roof or the arm on the microswitch getting bent and not operating the switch properly.
This will apply to the z3 and 3 series convertible soft tops and can apply.
If all goes to plan you should now have a working microswitch and a fully functioning roof.
